EHO Story 📩
Friday afternoons in Environmental Health were never dull.
Just as everyone was ready to head home, the most unusual calls always seemed to come in.
One particular Friday, we were sent to a coffee shop after a customer reported spotting a mouse darting across the counter. Not exactly what you want with your latte!
Armed with torches, we headed over to investigate. That’s when things took an unexpected turn…
Food Safety Tip ✅
5 Ways to Prevent Mice in Your Business:
- Make sure bins have tight-fitting lids and are emptied often.
- Keep food storage areas tidy and clear of clutter.
- Store dry goods off the floor and in sealed containers.
- Regularly clean under counters, fridges, and equipment.
- Seal gaps around pipes, doors, and skirting boards.
The Mouse That Wasn’t
As we crouched down to check a large chilled display unit, I suddenly felt something brush against my leg.
In my mind, it could only be one thing: a mouse.
I panicked, kicked out, and to my horror landed my foot straight on my colleague’s head. He’d leaned in close behind me to get a better look, and ended up the victim of my “mouse defence reflex”.
No actual mouse but we did find plenty of droppings in the kitchen and storage areas. The customer had been right, and the café had to close temporarily while the infestation was brought under control.
The Serious Lesson
It might make a funny story now, but pest problems are no laughing matter. Mice spread bacteria, damage reputations, and can lead to costly closures.
Prevention is always better than cure. Regular checks, good cleaning, and sealing up entry points are the best ways to keep unwanted visitors out.
