When a fridge door nearly landed on my foot…

EHO Story 📩

Some inspections are routine, you know, checks of cleaning, storage, prep, food safety records, food safety management systems etc. But every so often, something happens that you never forget.

One day, during a visit to a kebab shop, I reached for the handle of an under-counter fridge.

The entire door came straight off in my hand. 😳

I froze, convinced I’d just broken their fridge. The staff stayed silent, watching me struggle with a heavy metal door hanging there in my hand. Finally, after what felt like forever, one of them said calmly, “Oh no, it was already broken.”

Thanks for the warning…

Food Safety Tip ✅

A broken fridge door isn’t just awkward, it can compromised food safety…

If a fridge door isn’t sealing properly, it can lead to:

❌ Unsafe food temperatures: high-risk foods must be kept below 8°C (ideally 1–5°C).

❌ Higher energy bills: the fridge has to work overtime to stay cool.

❌ Bacterial growth: perfect conditions for food poisoning.

💡 Regular maintenance is important. If it’s broken, fix it before it puts your food, customers (and even the EHO!!) at risk.

The Serious Lesson

It might seem minor, but small maintenance issues can quickly snowball into food safety hazards.

As funny as it might be, don’t wait for an EHO to find out the hard way. Keep equipment in good working order, and deal with problems early.
