EHO Story 📩
Ever wondered what an Environmental Health Officer (EHO) does when they find a mouse infestation? Well, let me tell you about one memorable day…
Once upon a time, during my 11 years working in local government, I discovered a food business with a widespread mouse infestation. Imagine gnawed food—packets of crisps, droppings everywhere, and filthy conditions. It was a public health nightmare.
When an EHO finds conditions that pose an “imminent risk to the health of the public,” we must take immediate action to protect the public. In this case, I served a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice (HEPN), which requires the officer to apply to the court to get it turned into an official Order.
To make it official, I had to present the evidence in court—including photos and, yes, an evidence bag with dead mice found on sticky boards under the shelves.
The judge looked at the photos but wanted nothing to do with the actual mice. Can’t blame them! 😅
Food Safety Tip
Here are some tips to prevent pest infestation in your food business 👇
- Eliminate access to the things they need: food, moisture, warmth, and shelter
- Minimise entry points and ensure good pest-proofing
- Regularly check for holes and make sure any holes are sealed
- Clear up spillages immediately and make sure no taps are left dripping
- Ensure high standards of cleaning at all times
- Store food off of the floor, away from the walls, and cover/ package them thoroughly
- Store waste correctly and make sure internal and external areas are free of clutter
- Thoroughly check deliveries of raw materials and laundry for signs of pests
- Ensure there are no quiet, undisturbed areas where pests could hide
- Do not allow vegetation or dis-used equipment etc. to build up
- Ensure that checks are done regularly on the effectiveness of these controls
- Train team members (including cleaners) in what your controls are and what they need to do. For example, the signs of pests to look out for and who to report issues to
- Have a competent pest control contractor who can come and periodically inspect the premises
