EHO Story 📩
A fellow Environmental Health Officer once shared a story that’s stayed with me ever since.
They were interviewing a food business owner who hadn’t followed up on a Hygiene Improvement Notice. So, they asked, “Why didn’t you comply?”
The owner’s reply was simple:
“Because you gave me a zero. It demotivated me.”
No argument. No excuse. Just complete honesty.
When a business gets a low hygiene score, it can feel like a punch in the gut. Embarrassment, panic, frustration… sometimes people don’t know how to bounce back.
Food Safety Tip ✅
A poor hygiene rating doesn’t have to be the end of the story, it can be the start of your comeback.
✔️ Support your team. A zero score can be discouraging, so lead with guidance, not blame.
✔️ Get the right training. Knowledge gives your team the confidence to do things right next time.
✔️ Make an action plan. Fix issues one by one, small steps add up to big improvements.
The Serious Lesson
Getting a poor rating isn’t the end. What matters is what happens next.
With the right attitude and support, every food business can recover and improve
